Why Context Matters in Wind Farm Operations

The same data point can mean very different things depending on the turbine, the conditions and its history.

Sample draft content. This article has not yet been reviewed or published.

Wind farms are complex systems operating in variable environments. Two turbines of the same model on the same site can behave differently because of their position, their maintenance history or small differences in configuration.

Three kinds of context

  • Operating context: wind conditions, curtailment, grid events and control settings.
  • Asset context: turbine model, component history, previous repairs and known issues.
  • Organisational context: maintenance plans, access constraints and priorities.

Bringing these together is what allows a team to move from noticing something to understanding it. It is also where much of the time in an investigation is spent today.
